For the last home game of this season, Bellville City under seven boys welcomed the neighbours from across the road, Holy Cross.
The conditions were perfect for some good footy to be played and it was clear from the onset that both our boys and that of Holy Cross were keen on a win.
It’s important to note that the return fixture played earlier in the season was a turning point for the Bellville boys as although they only got a draw then (0-0), the improvement in play would set the tone for the remainder of the season.
The first period was exciting, end to end entertainment as both teams showed their intent to come away with the win. After some good saves from Kai in goals, the 1st Period ended 0-0.
The second period again, was more of the same, end to end action. With 2 minutes played, the Bellville defence started wondering to high up the pitch, which drew Kyle out of the box to leave the goals exposed and a long range drive from Holy Cross’ striker put them 1-0 up. About half way through the second period Josh, Booth and Austen broke through on goal and were pushing for a goal.
The Holy Cross goalie came out and cleared a loose ball leaving his goals exposed. The ball fell to Josh who neatly slotted in the ball from outside the box to make it 1-1. Kieran was solid in defence and Austen in midfield with Kyle in goals ensured we were in the game going into the last period.
As the third and final period started, the boys knew it was now or never to win the game. With Josh putting up his hand to go in goal, it was important to get a good balance in formation and strengths of the boys to ensure we could sneak the game. On the two occasions Josh was called upon he ably cleared the ball without needing to use his hands.
It was in midfield and attack that Tyler, Connor and Kai were having the battle. They were doing well though and on the break, Connor scored to take Bellville City into the lead with 5mins to play and soon after that Tyler scored after a goal mouth scramble ended in his favour. Kai, Tyler and Kyle eventually ended the game on the sidelines with Booth, Austen and Kieran seeing the game through to end with the support of Connor and Josh in goals.
A deserved 3-1 win in favour of Bellville City.
A memorable last home game of the season and as the boys go into a tough final fixture against Vasco away on the weekend they can do so in confidence and with the heads up high.
