On Saturday 17th June BCFC played host to Goodwood football club U11A. As coach I relied heavily on the assistant coach and took a bit of a break in the 1st half from frantically making the calls and screaming up and down the sideline. I positioned myself at the Goodwood side of the field determined to snap the winning photo of a ball in flight breaking the back of the Goodwood net.
I was a little arrogant in my preparations for the game insisting that it would be a walk in the park for BCFC. Oh how confidently arrogant one can become. Well we did go one up before half time with a brilliant cross by Matthew Jones which was going straight into the net before it was helped along by the boot of Olunje.
Bellville were all over the small box area in the 1st half and Matthew had a further two close calls with one shot edged over the keepers head only to clip the cross bar and bounce back in field and a second from a brilliant corner denied by the back of the Goodwood defenders head millimetres from the line.
The Goodwood goal keeper played like a star but was not keen to receive praise from his opponents coach. I think he believed I was playing some kind of mind game on him. And at half time he looked at me and said,” I do not know you so go away and leave me alone!”
In the 2nd half Bellville slacked off and decided to play the remaining 20 minutes in their own half. This proved a near fatal mistake and Goodwood put a shot through the keepers legs to level the score 1-1. I suddenly jumped back into action and started using my booming voice to waken my men and to frighten them back into reality. It helped and the much needed winning goal was delivered via an excellent finish from Nahum Rhode.
The whistle came just in time and Bellville could claim the win and break the cycle of drawing the past four matches.
Full time: Bellville City FC 2 Goodwood United FC 1
An excellent effort by goal keeper Xander who now can kick like a star. Also great captaining and play by the ever reliable Athan de Jager. Matthew Jones once again showed he is a force in the team and was unlucky not to have scored a goal.
The man of the match however was shared this tiime by the two goal scorers Olunje and Nahum.
