On Saturday 29 July, BCFC Avengers came up against a determined Durbanville A at Bellville. What had promised to be an epic match with both sides determined to secure a win ended in an unexpected result. Well at least for BCFC that is.
In the first half the fight was taken to Durbanville with a few good shots on target but the Durbanville goal keeper and defensive play was up for the challenge and kept the ball out their goals. Durbanville slotted a goal just before the half time whistle.
BCFC then threw everything at them but their defensive play was in top form.
Durbanville on the attack caused much confusion and instead of clearing the ball from the small box an ex goal keeper now playing in the outfield could not stop his reflexes from catching the ball in both hands. This rare mistake gave Durbanville a penalty and they made sure to slot it and go 2-0 ahead.
With 12 minutes left to play the BCFC boys were not giving up and the coach still firmly believed that they could pull back the deficit. Time was running out and two opportunities were spilled over the crossbar. Bellville threw caution to the wind and pushed all available players forward in the hope of converting but a brilliant through ball turned the Bellville defenders and it was too late. A third goal plunged the dagger into the heart and the beast.
Oh well this was the one game you would want to win but on the day the better side got the reward. The day was not lost as the leadership displayed by the captain and the care towards the young man that made the hand ball slip by his team mates was far more important than the win.
The captain also took a ball to the face from a point blank shot which was as a result of an opponent losing his temper after being beaten in play. The captain innocently and unnecessarily suffered a blood nose but never retaliated and after composing himself continued with the game. It was an example to all that witnessed the incident and a true display of leadership.
Proud to be with these kids in victory and defeat.
Coach Andre
