We hosted Rygersdal this weekend in the Knockout Cup 1st round and to be completely honest, coming into this game morale in the camp was really low as we just weren’t playing to our full known potential in our previous games to the lead up to this one. Games were just way to inconsistent and we needed a mindset change.
We had a long, hard look at ourselves and were fully determined to put all the previous wrongs right in this one.
We worked tirelessly hard in training all week focusing on the areas we had been lacking previously and built a much better level of confidence in all forms of our play and this showed right from the outset as we completely dominated all exchanges of the game, our quick switch of play from left to right put Lee Herbert through and he totally outpaced his marker and we were 1-0 up after about 15min.
We kept pressing, spurning numerous chances but it was looking positive nonetheless.
About 10min before Halftime, Luke Van Der Merwe (on Debut) received a sublime low- cross from the right and finished with aplomb, Bellville City 2-0 up confidence growing…
About 2min before the halftime break, Rygersdal with one of their numerous long balls on the day got lucky, we failed to clear our lines and they got a clear shot on goal and finished nicely in the bottom right hand corner, 2-1 at the break.
Half time: Bellville City FC 2 Rygersdal 1
We regrouped and knew what we needed to do to keep the pressure on our opponents, as mentioned we had plentiful opportunities to put the game to bed and just didn’t take our chances.
The 2nd half fared MUCH better and Bellville City ran the show from the onset, our halftime talk was coming to fruition and it showed in the way we played, slick passes, great runs off ball, it was just great on the eye stuff and before you knew it, Peter Laubscher took an absolute blinder of a free kick and the opponents goalkeeper was beaten with absolutely no chance.
Rygersdal were now getting despondent and frustrated and gave away a clear penalty (handball) which Grant White dispatched cleanly. 4-1 up with 20min to go.
We were awarded a corner with about 10min to play and Grant White netted his brace from the resulting corner to finish the 5-1 rout of Rygersdal on the day.
We have loads of work to do in the league but this victory might be the stepping stone we needed to ignite our season.
Glory, Glory Bellville City!
